Introduction
Frogs as Ripples translates Australia’s threatened frog data into a set of circular ripple fields. Each ripple field represents a broad frog grouping, and each ring within it represents one threatened frog species.
The image draws on the connection between frogs, water, sound, and disturbance. A frog call can spread through a wetland like a ripple; here, those ripples become a way to show species counts and conservation status across different frog habitats and life strategies.
How to read the infographic
Each ripple field represents one frog grouping. Each ring within a ripple field represents one threatened frog species. Line style shows conservation status:
light dotted = Extinct
round-dotted = Critically Endangered
dashed = Endangered
solid = Vulnerable
The ripple fields are not habitat maps. They are a visual structure for comparing species counts and conservation status across frog groupings.
Why frogs as ripples?
I chose ripples because frogs are strongly associated with water, sound, rainfall, wetlands, streams, and night calls. The circular forms suggest both water movement and the spreading presence of frog calls through a landscape.
The metaphor also suits the structure of the data. Each ring can stand for one species, while the size and density of each ripple field shows how many threatened species sit within that grouping.
Why these groupings?
The species are arranged into broad functional and habitat-based groupings to make the dataset easier to read. Some groups are based on habitat, such as wetland, stream, forest, or bog-associated frogs. Others reflect life strategy or ecological specialisation, such as burrowers or narrow-range specialists.
The groupings are designed for visual comparison and communication. They are not intended to replace formal taxonomic classification.
Groupings shown in the infographic
Ground / Bog — 11 species
Frogs associated with sphagnum, boggy ground, moist terrestrial habitats, or other ground-level environments. Sphagnum is a type of moss that grows in very wet, acidic places such as bogs, peatlands, seepages, and saturated highland ground. So, think frogs associated with damp mossy bog systems rather than ordinary pond edges.
Stream / Torrent — 11 species
Frogs linked to flowing water, including streams, creeks, torrents, and nearby riparian habitat. Riparian means the zone along the edge of a river, creek, or stream. So riparian habitat is the streamside vegetation, banks, rocks, leaf litter, and wet margins beside flowing water.
Wetland / Floodplain — 8 species
Frogs associated with wetlands, floodplains, marshes, swamps, and other still or seasonally wet environments.
Forest / Leaf-litter — 7 species
Frogs tied to forest floors, moist leaf litter, rainforest, or sheltered ground-layer habitat.
Tree Frogs — 7 species
Arboreal or semi-arboreal frogs associated with vegetation, forest structure, and elevated calling or breeding sites.
Burrowers — 6 species
Frogs adapted to digging, sheltering underground, or surviving in habitats where burrowing is part of their life strategy.
Specialists — 2 species
A small grouping for frogs with highly specific ecological requirements that sit outside the larger visual clusters. These span the two extinct gastric-brooding frogs, grouped separately because of their highly unusual reproductive biology.
What the infographic reveals
The largest threatened frog groupings are ground / bog frogs and stream / torrent frogs. Wetland / floodplain frogs, forest / leaf-litter frogs, and tree frogs also form substantial clusters. Seen together, the ripples show that threatened frogs are not confined to one kind of habitat. Risk spreads across flowing water, wetlands, forests, bogs, underground refuges, and highly specialised ecological niches.
