Cephalopods: soft bodies, quick minds - a visual summary
Explored the incredible world of Cephalopods—experts in camouflage and intelligence in the fascinating BBC In Our Time podcast from 2018.
Key ideas from the episode
Octopus, squid, and cuttlefish belong to the mollusc family, yet they move, think, and hunt in ways that seem closer to vertebrates than to clams or snails. They evolved abilities: highly developed eyes, flexible bodies, rapid colour change for camouflage, powerful jet propulsion for movement, and large, complex nervous systems that support sophisticated behaviour. Their skin contains specialised cells such as chromatophores, iridophores, and leucophores, which allow them to change colour and texture in an instant. Cephalopods are also known for their intelligence. Octopuses in particular can solve problems, explore their environment, and manipulate objects using their arms. Despite their complexity, most species live relatively short lives, often growing quickly and reproducing only once before dying.
