  Stay sane in traffic

 

When we drive, we're constantly interpreting what we see. This leads us to make assumptions about the people on the road around us, and it is these assumptions that cause irritation levels to rise.

 
 

Psychologists, Dr Leon James and Dr Diane Nahl explain that “Decisions, options, reactions, and explanations constantly go on in our mind moment by moment as we cope with life's changing events.” This is called “making attributions”.

The negative effect of “making attributions” is easy to see in drivers. Especially when we sometimes blame other people for things because they are of a certain gender, race or status. If we can examine the assumptions, we can possibly stop any negative impact, like anger or road rage, they may have.

   

As James and Nahl say that “You can substitute for [the habits of thought and feeling you observe in yourself] new and healthier mental patterns and thereby permanently improve the quality of your traffic life.”

So, while traffic may try to bring out the worst in us, we can also try to understand why and take steps towards a more insouciant attitude. Forgeddaboudit...
