Each month The Independent Journalist will present a different Deity, from any one of the world's cultures. The intention is to provide an overview of the rich cultural diversity that exists in the sphere of religion, and we hope that awareness of such may help engender tolerance among the many religions of our world.

Seshat – The Scribe (Egyptian Goddess)

Our first Deity of the Month, is Seshat (also known as Seshet or Sesheta). Her name means 'The Female Scribe' and the Egyptian people believed that she was the inventor of writing. She was the matron of all libraries and Mistress of the House of Architects. She kept historical records and was also the goddess of accounting and mathematics.

It is significant that a goddess presided over positions usually held by men at the time...
